Mascot

Behold, we have a mascot. Cutest mascot in all of Rails Day, I betcha.

Drink: Well we drank a pot of coffee and now we're just running on water. And empty, we're getting hungry again. When will this Rails Day Hell end?!?

Muzik: I am now forcing poor Peat to listen to live bootlegs of R.E.M. What will I do to him next? Stay tuned.

The Grind

Ray's wrangling interface issues, I'm squeezing out templated pages and refactoring the crap out of our models. Have I mention how much I love has_many :through?

Four Hours In

Twenty hours to go, and we have the rock and roll.  Literally.  Ray's busting out The Who … and giggling.  It makes me nervous.  I mean, how can I know that he isn't plotting against me?

To take a brief tangent:  back in 2002 I survived 100 hours of no sleep with my best buddy down in New Zealand.  Paranoia and physical violence played a pretty big part of those four days.  I haven't told Ray about that.  I think I'll let him read it here on ye olde' blog.  24 hours isn't as bad as 100, but you never know …

Anyhow, the backend code is falling together well.  The scoring algorithms are done (I think) and I should be done cranking out ugly ass prototypes for the major pages by the end of the next hour.  Woo!

Digg Team Needmore Coffee!

What Next?

Well, we're done. We outta here! No, just kidding. We're just getting started. I don't have anything new graphics-wise to post, just sorting out the CSS and getting some basic pages up.

Drinks: Well we broke into the French Press of Coffee action here. What can I say. Drinking the Guatemala Mandarina from Stumptown. Interestingly, we cupped a Guatemala earlier, unfortunately from Starbucks, but it was definitely the better of their two. Not as good as the Stumptown one, though.

Minutes are gone…

Hey, 10:52 here and all is well. I am working on the visual thing. Posted some examples on Flickr. Peat is staring at what appears to be binary code. Different levels going on. Neighbors downstairs are somehow shaking the whole house. Or we're having an earthquake – not sure yet.

Drinks: We're drinking a mix of pomegranite juice and green tea. Invigorating! The desk is shaking a bit…

Music: We listened to two Charles Mingus albums, and now we're working on some of the Smithsonian Jazz Collection. I feel that Peat and I work well together with Jazz. Just a hunch, though. Not confirmed.

First Hour

The first hour is going very smoothly.  We planned out a lot of our initial modelling and controllers on paper, so for me it’s just a bunch of busy work creating tests, migrations, fixtures, and adding relationships and validation to the models.

Ray’s busy workin’ on the design … and it’s hot.  Maybe he’ll post some screen shots.  ;)

Minutes to go…

Hey, it's 8:47 our time. That means we only have thirteen short minutes left!

Food: We have so far eaten a pizza and had some of Kandace's fabulous soup.

Drinks: We had a ton of coffee to taste. I feel quite buzzed, but I'm not sure how to feel about it yet. I feel more awake than I probably am. Should get used to that.

Music: Hey Hey Ma Ma Yo Yo, by Junior Senior.

The Inaugural Cupping

This was my first cupping — Ray's a regular pro with these sorts of things, and it was great to have him take me through the process.  Our first round included six coffees:

  • Stumptown Brazil Sao Benedito
  • Starbucks Ethiopia Sidamo
  • Stumptown Ethiopia Harar
  • Starbucks Guatemala Antigua
  • Stumptown Rwanda Karaba
  • Stumptown Sumatra Mandehling

As a fairly casual (but dedicated!) coffee drinker, this was an eye opener.  The Ethiopia Harar was almost candy like — very fruity, chocolately flavors.  The Sumatra Mandehling tasted like cardboard … but not in a bad way.  The Ethiopia Sidamo had some rather charcoal-y attributes.  I'd add cream to that one.

Anyhow.  Fifteen minutes until we kick off and start coding …

What is Cuppin, anyhow?

Cupping is to coffee what tasting is to wine.  Cuppin is the app we're building to help people find, compare, and enjoy coffees from around the world.

It's also a great excuse to try a lot of good coffees and get rocked on caffeine for a 24 hour coding competition.

Take a look at our Flickr pool for a photo series about a real life cupping.  While RailsDay 2006 starts at 9:00 PM over here on the West Coast … we figure we'd get the party started a little earlier by cupping six coffees at 8:00.

If you'd like to join us via IRC, point your favorite client at irc.freenode.net and join #cuppin … the next 24 hours are going to be a little crazy!
